William McEwan lived from 1827 to 1913. McEwan was born at Alloa, Scotland which was a thriving harbor town with local industries such as malting, brewing, distilling, glass making and textiles. He went to work for his brother-in-law, James Younger, of the Alloa Brewing family where he earned his brewing apprenticeship. By 1856, using borrowed capital, he established his own business at the Fountain Brewery on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland. McEwan Brewers quickly became successful as he took advantage of cheaper transportation and his trade expansion into the British Colonies. McEwan’s Scottish Brewers drew heavily from imagery of the British Empire in its branding and advertising.
With his success, William McEwan entered Parliament in 1886. He devoted himself more into politics and relied upon William Younger to manager the business.
Apart from his businesses that still bear his name, William McEwan was a notable philanthropist. He acquired a valuable art collection and presented the paintings to the National Gallery of Scotland. He built and donated the splendid McEwan Hall at the University of Edinburgh that opened in 1897 which is still a vibrant hall used by the City of Edinburgh.
McEwan died in London on May 12, 1913. His estate included investments in railways, shipping and mining along with his Brewing businesses in both Britain and overseas. William McEwan was considered to be one of the most successful businessmen of his generation.
