The first document gold find in the U.S. occurred in 1799 at the Reed farm in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. From 1804 to 1828, North Carolina supplied all the domestic gold coined by the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia for currency and remained the highest producer of gold in the country until the 1848 gold rush in California. At  its height, the estimated value of gold recovered in North Carolina reached over one million dollars a year.
