    Battle of Iwo Jima
Iwo Jima, located in the western Pacific Ocean, lies just 650 miles from Tokyo.
During the Second World War, this Island was valuable to both Japan and the United States. On February 19, 1945, after extensive bombing by U.S. planes, 70,000 American Marines invaded the island. By mid-March, the island was under U.S. control and became a base for U.S. planes en route to Japan.
