    Description

A fabulous antique George III 18K gold, black and white enamel mourning ring, dated to 1811 and inscribed to Alexander Brodie the naval ship stove inventor. Alexander Brodie was born in 1732 and was an industrialist and manufacturer of patent iron stoves in the late 18th/early 19th century. In 1780 he took a regular stove, added various additions and made it easy to take apart and clean, thereby turning it into a 'Brodie stove'. He was granted a Royal patent and for the next 29 years the Admiralty gave him a monopoly to install Brodie stoves on all their ships, something which made him his fortune. Brodie stoves were fitted on ships including the infamous HMS Bounty and Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory. Brodie never married and on his death in 1811 left his fortune to his nieces, nephews and various charities. This wonderful 18K gold mourning ring has a central circle of black enamel flanked by two thinner bands of white enamel, the black enamel with gold inlay reading 'Alexander Brodie Esq Died 6 Jan:1811 Aged 77'. The ring has lines of lovely reed-work either side of the white enamel. The ring is hallmarked inside the band with 'WH' for maker William Hall (registered London 1795), George III's head, the lion passant and date letter 'P' for 1810-1811. The ring tests for 18K gold. A great chance to own a piece of Industrial Revolution history! The ring is approximately a size 11. The band is approximately 9mm wide. The ring has a total weight of approximately 5.6 grams. The ring is in good condition with a few areas of missing enamel. Please check pictures. Thanks for looking and please take a look at my other items!

    TERMS OF SALE & RETURNS
We make great efforts to honestly and accurately describe each item we list. We back this up with many photographs, all with a close-up zoom option for detailed inspection. Due to the majority of our items being antique/vintage and often unique it can be difficult to determine age and as such all our items are sold 'as is'. However, if we are not certain about the age of an item we will either not mention an age or say the item is being sold as a later or modern piece and then leave it up to more experienced buyers to determine the exact age. Items are not returnable if it was not of the age/value you were hoping it to be with no exceptions. If we place a date on an item we guarantee it to be of that period or earlier. If you require further pictures or more information about an item, please let us know prior to bidding or purchase. Items cannot be returned for any condition issues either shown in the pictures or mentioned in the listing. As many items we sell are one hundred years or older we will not accept returns for wear consistent with the item's age. Any item mentioned as sold 'as is' in the listing will not be eligible for any form of return or refund. If it is determined an item is eligible for a return, the item must be shipped back within 48 hours, insured and tracked. A restocking fee may apply. We are very easy to work with and welcome any and many questions during our listings, so please let us know if you have one! Thanks again for looking!
