As a tribute to the 200th Anniversary of the operation of Congress under the United States Constitution, the U.S. Mint issued a series of commemorative coins in 1989. This 1989-S Congressional Silver Dollar is a product of the San Francisco Mint, struck from 0.7736 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver with a breathtaking proof finish. Magnificent Patriotic Designs
The obverse features an interpretation of the Statue of Freedom, the bronze Lady Liberty sculpture by Thomas Crawford that was placed at the pinnacle of the Capitol Dome in 1863. The background is adorned with stylized clouds and rays of sunlight, interspersed with the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "1789," "1989" and the Mint mark "S."
Centered on the reverse is a rendition of the mace of the House of Representatives, which is comprised of a staff topped by an eagle perched upon a globe. The mace is flanked by the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "BICENTENNIAL OF THE CONGRESS," and encircled by the additional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR." Both designs are credited to William Woodward, with the engravings executed by Chester Young Martin.
